The Merwedebrug was in such bad shape that maintenance was needed urgently to ensure traffic safety. Rijkswaterstaat – who is responsible for (among other things) maintaining roads and bridges in The Netherlands – selected Volker Infra/Van Oord (ViVo) as the main contractor for the project. ViVo commissioned (among others) Venus & De Waard to work on the job.
